Associate General Counsel for Private Family Office (In-House, Direct Hire)

A St. Louis-based private family office that provides tax, investment, wealth planning, and related services is seeking an Associate General Counsel. At least ten years of attorney experience focused on tax, wealth management, and business transactions is required. If you are a highly professional self-starter with a strong work ethic, an ownership mindset, and outstanding interpersonal skills, this may be the perfect role for you. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience with all aspects of tax compliance and reporting, wealth/estate planning, and private investments. As this is a hybrid position with at least 4 days per week in the office, the successful applicant must reside in or relocate to the St. Louis metropolitan area.

Responsibilities include:
  • Review and sign (as preparer) tax returns (e.g., individual income tax and gift tax, partnerships, trusts, and private foundations)
  • Oversee inquiries from, and represent clients before, the IRS and state departments of revenue in connection with various tax matters (e.g., audits, appeals)
  • Advise on tax, investment, financial, general business, real estate, individual, trusts, wealth/estate planning, charitable, private foundation and other matters
  • Review legal documents, including wills, trusts, investment partnerships, direct investments, real estate investments and general business/corporate matters
  • Prepare analyses for various financial, investment and tax matters
  • Respond to investment inquiries (e.g., AML/KYC) and coordinate regulatory/compliance matters and associated filings
  • Coordinate and manage outside counsel/advisors

Basic Requirements of the Associate General Counsel for Private Family Office:
  • 10+ years of legal experience focused on a wide range of tax compliance and reporting, wealth/estate planning, and private investments
  • Expert generalist in all aspects of the tax law (e.g., Federal income tax, partnership tax, S corporations, fiduciary income tax, gift/estate/GST tax, state income tax); experience should include compliance/reporting on individual, partnership, trust, S corporation and gift tax returns, and individual tax planning/wealth management
  • Expert generalist in individual, partnership, corporate/general business, trusts, wealth/estate planning, investment, financial, real estate, charitable and private foundation matters
  • Experience with private investments (e.g., private equity/real assets, hedge funds)
  • Excellent academic credentials from an ABA-accredited law school
  • LLM (tax) is strongly preferred
  • Excellent analytical, written, verbal and interpersonal skills
  • High integrity, honesty, loyalty, self-confidence and discretion
  • Licensed to practice law in Missouri (or eligible to obtain a Missouri license)
  • Commissioned as a Notary in the State of Missouri (or eligible to obtain a Missouri Notary Commission)

Compensation:
Pay: Compensation includes a highly competitive salary plus bonus opportunity. Pay is based on multiple factors including but not limited to work experience, qualifications, and credentials.

Benefits: In addition to pay, a comprehensive benefits package is also provided, including medical, life and disability insurance, plus a defined contribution plan with employer contributions up to 25% of compensation (subject to applicable limits).
