General FAQs

What is flexible legal staffing?

Flexible legal staffing refers to the placement of experienced attorneys and legal professionals on a contract, part-time, full-time, or project basis to meet fluctuating legal workloads without adding permanent headcount. Companies and law firms use flexible legal staffing to scale their legal teams quickly, manage overflow work, cover leaves of absence, navigate a transition, or access specialized expertise—without the long-term commitment of a traditional hire. Latitude provides top-tier flexible legal talent, often with Big Law and in-house experience, who are matched to each client’s needs and culture.

What is Latitude?

Latitude is a Chambers and Partners globally ranked flexible legal staffing company serving corporate legal departments and law firms nationwide.

We directly employ legal talent from coast to coast and have thousands of individuals in our talent network. Outstanding attorneys are attracted to Latitude by the sophisticated work, great clients, competitive pay, and benefits along with a refreshing combination of flexibility and boundaries.

How is Latitude different from other legal staffing agencies or marketplaces?

Latitude is a flexible legal staffing provider known for its high-touch, peer-to-peer service and exceptional attorney quality. Latitude is led by former law firm partners and senior in-house counsel who understand the high stakes, exacting standards, and nuances of legal recruiting and hiring.

Our directors of recruiting are all former practicing attorneys, which allows us to deeply vet and precisely match legal professionals to each client’s needs. We specialize in providing highly experienced, Big Law and Fortune 500–caliber attorneys—many of whom have served as GCs, AGCs, or senior counsel. This peer-led model ensures that clients receive thoughtfully selected, on-point candidates.

From start to finish, our service is consultative, tailored, and focused on long-term fit. That’s why top law firms, legal departments, and growing companies trust Latitude when quality, judgment, and speed matter.

For Startups & VC/PE Firms

We don’t have in-house legal staff yet — can Latitude help?

Yes. Latitude works with growing companies that need seasoned legal support but aren’t ready to hire a full-time General Counsel. We provide part-time or fractional in-house attorneys, including fractional GCs, who can step in quickly, scale as your needs grow, and provide executive-level legal guidance.

What kind of legal support can Latitude provide for startups or portfolio companies?

We can provide experienced attorneys for:

  • Commercial contract negotiation and review
  • Employment law matters
  • Fundraising and investor relations support
  • Privacy, compliance, and risk management
  • M&A and exit planning
  • Ongoing legal strategy and day-to-day support
  • Managing outside counsel and legal spend

All attorneys are matched based on your specific needs, industry, and growth stage.

How does Latitude differ from outside counsel or traditional law firms?

Latitude Attorneys embed directly into your team and operate as in-house counsel, handling legal work typically handled in-house. Clients continue utilizing their outside counsel for high-stakes matters, while keeping in-house work with fractional attorneys until they are ready to bring on a full-time General Counsel or Head of Legal.

Do you offer fractional General Counsel services?

Yes. Latitude provides experienced attorneys who serve as fractional General Counsel for companies that need senior-level legal leadership but aren’t ready to hire a full-time GC. Fractional GCs can support strategic planning, contract review, compliance, employment law, fundraising, M&A, and more. This model is especially valuable for startups, scale-ups, and private equity-backed companies looking for executive-level legal guidance in a flexible, cost-effective format. We tailor each engagement to match the client’s workload, goals, and budget.

For Attorneys & Legal Professionals

What are some of the reasons attorneys choose flexible legal work?

Attorneys are increasingly drawn to flexible legal talent work because it offers the ability to align their careers with their lives—not the other way around. Many appreciate the freedom to work as much or as little as they choose, set their own hours, and take meaningful time off between engagements. This model allows for maximum flexibility without sacrificing long-term career growth.

Flexible work doesn’t mean compromising on the quality of assignments. Attorneys placed through Latitude often handle high-value matters for respected regional, national, and global organizations. These engagements provide the opportunity to focus on challenging legal work while expanding expertise across industries and practice areas.

How does Latitude support attorneys throughout the engagement process?

Latitude is built by attorneys, for attorneys. Our recruiting and client service team members are all former practicing lawyers who understand the pressures, priorities, and career aspirations of legal professionals. From the moment you apply, you’re working with peers who take the time to understand your goals, strengths, and preferences.

We don’t just place attorneys—we advise and advocate for them. We provide detailed insight into each opportunity, coach you through the interview process, and support you throughout the engagement.

What types of attorneys do you hire?

Latitude hires experienced attorneys with Big Law or in-house counsel backgrounds across a wide variety of industries and practice areas and in all U.S. states and some international jurisdictions.

How many hours per week can I expect to work?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer, and that’s the advantage of flexible legal talent. Latitude’s clients have roles that range from five to 10 hours per week to full-time and beyond. We match attorneys to roles based on alignment between the client’s needs and the attorney’s availability and desired schedule.

How long do typical attorney engagements last?

Engagement lengths vary widely based on client needs. Some are short-term—lasting a few months to support a specific project or leave of absence. Others last for a year or longer, particularly when attorneys are brought in for ongoing overflow support, interim leadership roles, or contract-to-hire situations. At Latitude, we work closely with both clients and attorneys to set clear expectations on engagement duration and to ensure the arrangement remains a good fit as needs evolve.

Are positions remote, hybrid, or onsite?

We support all types of engagements—remote, hybrid, and onsite. The work location depends on the client’s needs and your preferences. We’ve seen a growing demand for specialized attorneys, and in order to meet demand, clients are often open to remote work to find just the right candidate, especially as people licensed in one state move to other parts of the country. While remote legal work is a growing trend, we do have hybrid and onsite roles as well.

Do you place attorneys in full-time roles?

Yes. While many of the roles our clients offer are interim or project-based, we also place attorneys in permanent, full-time positions. Additionally, interim roles can evolve into permanent opportunities when the fit is strong, and both the client and attorney are interested in continuing the arrangement.

Do Latitude Attorneys get benefits?

Yes. The large majority of our attorneys are W-2 employees. Those working 20 or more hours per week have access to a full suite of benefits, including 401(k), health, vision, and dental insurance, long-term disability, life insurance, and professional development stipends. And as a welcome bonus—you’ll also receive a Latitude swag box to celebrate the start of your first engagement.

How do I apply?

We receive thousands of applications from highly qualified and accomplished attorneys, and, regrettably, we are not able to follow up directly with every applicant.
